Care and Support for those Infected and Affected by HIV/AIDS
The WWS objective for care and support is to provide a comprehensive care plan, which includes educational, emotional, physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects for not only patients, but also families and orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).
Care and support services provided by WWS include:
- palliative and respite day-care at Boikhutsong Hospice
- home community-based care (HCBC) - WWS carers assist and care for patients and their families in their own homes. Daily home visits are made to all category 2 patients and when necessary they are referred to a professional nurse and then to a doctor at WWS. Professional nursing staff also carry out home visits to selected patients for pain management and assessment and provide psychosocial care and counselling.
- pastoral support to patients and their families where appropriate
- assistance to eligible beneficiaries to enroll for relevant governmental social grants for patients and carers
- provision of support groups for people living with HIV/AIDS (Kutlwano Support Group) and tuberculosis (TB) and their carers
- assistance an preliminary training for income generating projects initiated by the HIV/AIDS and TB support groups
- care and support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)
- Hlabologang pre-school, providing child development for up to 40 pre-school cildren. A pre-requisite of entrance is that a child's HIV status is known by the carers.
Boikhutsong Hospice
WWS provides palliative and respite day-care at Boikhutsong Hospice which is also the base for the Wellness Centre. The hospice can accommodate up to 8 patients at one time, in separate male and female wards. The hospice is fitted with UVB lighing to prevent the spread of TB within the wards and Wellness Centre. Transport of respite day-care patients to and from the hospice is provided by WWS.
Orphans and Vulnerable Children
The aim of our Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Programme is to improve the quality of life of the orphans and vulnerable children of Vaalwater and Leseding and the surrounding area. In addition to the activities at Timothy House for youth development, we also provide support specific to the needs of those children affectd by HIV/AIDS, through the following services:
- educational programmes for primary care givers to address the truths about HIV/AIDS, and treatment and care for those infected and affected by it
- discussion groups to address challenges faced by OVCs and their primary care givers
- referral to local stakeholders to assist with further management when necessary
- home visits to monitor the home environment and the progress of individual children
- feeding scheme and evaluation of all under 5s status by height and weight
- bereavement and spiritual counselling
- voluntary councelling and testing for HIV/AIDS
- life skills and health education programmes,with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS
- early childhood development at Hlabologang pre-school
